In 2025, the MacBeth Concert Series celebrates its 25th Silver Anniversary. Their mission has been consistent: “to enrich the cultural life of Chebeague by producing a series of classical music and jazz concerts each summer.” The series is primarily supported by generous gifts from concert-goers, but has also received grants from the Recompense Fund and the Raymond Family Foundation. It is important to note that all MacBeth concerts are always free to the public and its programs are managed by an all-volunteer steering committee.
For 25 years the series has thrilled island audiences with an eclectic mix of world-renowned artists such as Sebago Long Lake Music Festival, Tyler Putnam and Sarah Nordin, concert pianists Diane Walsh, Henry Kramer and new this year, Scott Cuellar, along with Grammy winners the New York Voices and Houston’s jazz icon, Paul English. By including local favorites such as the Novel Jazz Septet and the Seaside Brass Quintet, the concert series offers a well-balanced program for all to enjoy. In 2022, the series added a program directed at children performed by the Halcyon String Quartet. The season, which typically includes six or seven concerts, runs from mid-June to late-August. Most concerts are held at the Chebeague Community Church; one or two each summer, though, are performed at such outdoor venues as the Chebeague Island School yard or a willing homeowner’s lawn. The MacBeth Concert Series is guided by an eight-person Steering Committee, whose Chairman is Carl Tubbesing and whose Treasurer is John Howard. The series is under the umbrella of the Chebeague Island Community Association, which serves as MacBeth’s fiscal agent. The Steering Committee is deeply grateful to CICA’s Treasurer Bob Earnest for his indispensable encouragement and support.
